FAQs

What if I forget to put my garbage out on the curb on my scheduled pick up day?

If you forget to place your can curbside, the driver will walk down your driveway and get the can as long as it is left outside. If your can is not outside, please call the office and we will see if we can schedule a special pick up.

Do I get charged if I do not have my can out?

If you are on vacation and call more than 24 hours prior to your scheduled pick up day, you will not be charged for that day of service.

What should I do if all my garbage doesn’t fit in the bin? Is there an extra charge?

Put the bagged garbage on top or alongside of the can. You will not be charged for the bag. If you find that you frequently have additional garbage that does not fit in your can, please call the office and we will drop off a larger bin for you.

What is recyclable? What should I recycle?

Many items can be recycled, including plastics, newspaper, aluminum and glass. Please visit the links below for up-to-date information in the recycling/waste disposal industry:

Do I have to sort my recyclables?

Yes. We strongly prefer that you sort your recyclables by type. This ensures that 100% of what is in your bin is completely recycled. If the items are mixed, only a small portion of them are recycled effectively.

Where does the garbage and recycling go?

All garbage is delivered to WLSSD’s processing center. Your recycling will be processed at our facility in West Duluth.

Can I get more compostable bags?

Can I compost my Christmas tree?

Yes. Although our regular composting season is May 1 through October 31, we do offer Christmas tree pick up from December 28 to January 10 at no extra charge to our customers. Simply leave your Christmas tree by your can on your regularly scheduled pick up day.

What happens if my can becomes damaged?

Please call the office and we will replace or repair the can.

What will (or won’t) you haul away?

We will haul away most items, except hazardous waste, which includes batteries, oils and other solvents. Hazardous items should be taken to WLSSD’s hazardous waste disposal center. Please call our office if you would like a special pick up of large items, electronics or large tree limbs.
